New Urban Bungalow
An eco-friendly, modern interpretation of the vintage Houston Height’s bungalow, the 3,200 square foot house, like other prototypes, is designed based on strategies that were used before air conditioning was available in Houston. It is site specific and oriented for cross ventilation with operable, casement, awning, and clerestory windows, and a large screened porch that runs along its entire length. A long, narrow floor plan without hallways and an open balcony at the second level overlooking living space below maximizes ventilation and reduces radiant heat. Strategically placed windows daylight spaces and lessen the need for artificial lighting. A pier and beam foundation allows the house to breathe and suits expansive soils. Its standing seam metal roof with three foot overhangs reflects heat, controls solar heat gain and sheds rain during heavy downpours. |
