In combination with “passive” green strategies, we use “active” green strategies appropriate to Houston’s climate and culture and locally available in the design and construction of our prototypes. These include:
- R-19 wall and R-30 roof insulation
- Heat pumps as backup energy sources for air conditioning and heating
- Ceiling fans in all rooms
- Energy Star appliances
- Low water, energy efficient toilets
- On demand hot water heaters
- Cement board siding
- Low VOC (volatile organic compounds) emitting paint
- Okite/ Ice Stone/ Paperstone Countertops
- Bamboo/Hickory flooring
- Metal roofing and siding
- Solar panels
- Low e, aluminum, thermally broken, commercially rated casement and awning windows manufactured by Ram Industries in Stafford, Texas
- Permeable pavers for driveways and walks
- Composite decking material
