Active Strategies

In combination with "passive" strategies, we use "active" energy saving strategies appropriate to Houston's hot and humid climate in the design and construction of our
prototypes. These include:

  • 2x6 wall studs and 2x10 ceiling rafters for R-19 wall and R-30 roof batt insulation with 1 inch air space and baffles.
  • Insulated cold floors.
  • XB 16 HVAC systems.
  • UVL radiant barriers on ¾ inch roof decking.
  • Ceiling fans in all rooms.
  • Energy Star appliances.
  • Low water, energy efficient toilets.
  • On demand hot water heaters.
  • Low maintenance Hardie siding.
  • Ceasarstone, Okite, and Quartzite countertops.
  • Solid Hardwood flooring and stair treads.
  • Standing seam metal roofs on continuous dormers to reflect sunlight and control solar heat gain.
  • Texas manufactured custom Low e, aluminum windows, and thermally broken operable windows throughout.
  • Permeable pavers for driveways and walks.
  • Mold resistant shower and tub walls.
  • Electrically controlled dampers and programmable thermostats.
  • LED lighting throughout.
  • Type A Pex piping for hot and cold water supply.
  • Water based floor sealers and cabinet stains.
